Holding Mechanism Release of Laser Utilizing Communications Equipment (LUCE) on the Optical Inter-orbit Communications Engineering Test Satellite, Kirari, (OICETS) And Kirari and Reimei (INDEX) Entering Initial Functional Verification Phase

August 25, 2005 (JST)

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)

JAXA would like to advise about the status of the Optical Inter-orbit Communications Engineering Test Satellite (Kirari) and the Innovative Technology Demonstration Experiment Satellite (Reimei), which were launched at 6:10 a.m. on August 24, 2005, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

[Holding Mechanism of the Laser Utilizing Communications Equipment (LUCE) on the Kirari]
JAXA released the holding mechanism of the Laser Utilizing Communications Equipment, LUCE, on the Kirari, and confirmed that the release operations were successfully carried out by analyzing telemetry data from the satellite.

[Kirari Entering the Initial Functional Verification Phase]
JAXA confirmed that Kirari was injected into its intended orbit and is functioning normally.

 Actual valueScheduled value
Apogee altitude 612.0 km (610.0 km)
Perigee altitude 610.4 km (609.7 km)
Inclination 97.8 degrees (97.8 degrees)
Period 96.9 minutes (96.9 minutes)

After the release of the LUCE holding mechanism was over, Kirari completed its scheduled critical phase, and moved to the initial functional verification phase. Onboard equipment functions will be verified for about three months until November.

[Reimei Entering the Initial Functional Verification Phase]
Reimei performed the sun acquisition automatic sequence, and JAXA confirmed that the sequence was successfully carried out by analyzing telemetry data from the satellite.

Reimei completed its scheduled critical phase as it finished the sequence, and move to the initial functional verification phase.

Finally, we would like to express our appreciation for the cooperation and support of all related personnel and organizations that helped contribute to this successful launch, and the tracking and control operations.
