"ISS-SCS Space Course" to be held

The National Institute of Multimedia Education

By utilizing the Space Collaboration System (SCS) which is operated and managed by the National Institute of Multimedia Education (NIME) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), NIME and the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) will hold the "ISS-SCS Space Course" on November 21, 2001. It includes communication with astronauts staying for a long time aboard the International Space Station (ISS). NASDA Astronaut Mamoru MOHRI act as the chair, and a lively discussion by the participants are expected. The date for the course might be changed due to the ISS operational convenience.

1. Date and hour : November 21 (Wednesday), 2001 17:00 - 19:00 (plan)
(Communication time with the ISS is expected to be about 20 minutes)
2.Site : NIME (Main Site) and approximately 120 sites in Japan




Outline of the "ISS-SCS Space Course"


The "ISS-SCS Space Course" is a special course to be conducted simultaneously at universities and other organizations across the country, which is transmitted via the SCS and operated and managed by NIME. The course includes communication with astronauts staying for a long time aboard the ISS, which is jointly developed by 15 countries including Japan.
What's more, NASDA Astronaut Mamoru MOHRI and NIME Professor Kimio KONDO talk about the ISS and the Japan Experiment Module (Kibo), and the Satellite Design Contest and the STARS Program , both are activities that students are working on, are introduced in the course. The STARS Program is a space experiment which will be conducted in STS-107(planned to be launched in 2002). Making use of the SCS characteristics (mutual communication), the course is expected to be more than just a lecture, but includes questions and discussion by participants from each site.
