Second International Space Exploration Forum (ISEF2) Side Events

The Cabinet Office, MEXT, METI and JAXA are hosting the side events to the second International Space Exploration Forum (ISEF2) *1, on March 3, 2018. Concerted efforts are taking place in preparation for the events, which are designed to inspire younger generations and the industrial arena from around the world to undertake the challenge of space exploration.

Through the side events, the hosting organizations seek to raise awareness of space exploration, stimulate the participation of private businesses in the space industry, and grow emerging human resources.

ISEF is a ministerial-level meeting to build support for global cooperation in space exploration. The Japanese government is hosting the second ISEF (ISEF2), to be held next year. ISEF2 will bring together Ministers, high-level officials from space-faring and emerging-space countries, and the heads of space agencies to talk about the opportunities and challenges they share. It will feature high-level, policy discussions about the future of space exploration and sustainable growth developments.

1. ISEF2 Side Events Overview

  • ISEF2 side events are Y-ISEF, for young professionals and I-ISEF, for the industries.
  • Multilateral discussions will take place on the socio-economic significance, value, necessity and visions of space exploration to achieve the following:
  1. (1) Increase international momentum for participation in space exploration
  2. (2) Explore opportunities for business innovation in space across industries unrelated to space, with the goal of stimulating the growth of space business
  3. (3) Grow human resources among the younger generations, and provide opportunities to build their career and network.

Y-ISEF "ISEF for Young Professionals"
  • Dates: February 28, 2018 - Tours of JAXA's facilities
    March 1, 2018 - Workshops by participants
    March 3, 2018 - Career mentoring
  • Place: Tokyo, Japan
  • Organized by: MEXT and JAXA
  • Supported by: Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) *2
  • Participants: Around 80 young professionals and students, age 18 to 35. Qualified individuals must submit application and be selected. The application process will start in autumn 2017.

SGAC is a global non-governmental, non-profit organization which aims to represent university students and young space professionals to the United Nations, space agencies, industry, and academia.
I-ISEF "ISEF for Industry"
  • Date: March 2, 2018
  • Place: At the ISEF2 site, Tokyo, Japan
  • Organized by: Cabinet Office, MEXT, METI and JAXA
  • Supported by: American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA)
  • Participants: About 400 participants mainly from the private sector, including individuals from space and other industries, investment agencies and entrepreneurs. Online registration will start in January 2018.

In autumn 2017, updates will be available on ISEF2 Side Events on the exclusive website.

Summaries of Y-ISEF and I-ISEF will be reported to ISEF2.
