Establishment of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Policy on Intellectual Property

June 12, 2020 (JST)

National Research & Development Agency
Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has established the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Policy on Intellectual Property, which shows its basic approach to intellectual property activities (detailed in the attachment and hereinafter called “the Policy”).

Based on the Policy, JAXA will conduct intellectual property activities to turn its technological achievements into intellectual property and then transfer it to the private sector in an appropriate manner, thereby enhancing its measures to utilize its R&D results to promote the creation of new businesses and open innovation, which will help expand the aerospace industry as globally expected and broaden the range of space activities. JAXA aims to make maximum use of the results achieved through this initiative for Japan’s economic growth.

In the activities that will lead to the creation of new knowledge, including those related to space and astronautical science and exploration, we will gather the wisdom of humanity to expand the area of activities in space and create intellectual assets* as defined in the Policy to make global achievements as JAXA.

JAXA will dispatch information about its intellectual assets including intellectual property to show the significance of aerospace development and utilization and the value and importance of the achievements made through the activities, thereby gaining more understanding and support from people around the country.

*Intellectual assets

Intellectual assets refer to the intangible assets that give a competitive advantage to JAXA and represent a broad concept that includes not only know-how, software and data identified as intellectual property useful in society but also scientific findings and human assets, such as the creativity, experience and skills of its staff.
