 The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has selected 40 research proposals (from 9 countries) for the 1st International Research Announcement of Opportunity (international AO*) for the asteroid Ryugu sample returned by the Hayabusa2 mission. The aim of the AO is to maximize the scientific outcome by soliciting research from all around the world.

Outline of the 1st International Research Announcement of Opportunity (international AO)

  • (1) Purpose

    • ・Maximize the scientific results from the Hayabusa2 Project by soliciting research proposals from researchers around the world, and providing samples to the research teams who can expect research results.
    • ・Contribute to the global development of planetary science through providing samples to researchers around the world via the international AO.
  • (2) Background

    • ・In December 2020, the Hayabusa2 sample capsule returned to Earth.
    • ・From June 2021, JAXA sample analysis work conducted an initial analysis in collaboration with a number of universities.
    • ・On December 17, 2021, the 1st international AO was issued to solicit research proposals from all over the world with the aim of maximizing scientific results.
    • ・March 25, 2022, was the deadline for applicants to submit a Notice of Intent. 105 applications were received (19 countries).
    • ・April 22, 2022, was the deadline for the Announcement of Opportunity. 57 research proposals were submitted (12 countries).
  • (3) Selection results

    • ・The Ryugu Sample Research Announcement of Opportunity Committee*1(AO Panel) deliberated and selected 40 out of the 57 submissions (9 countries) (74 samples, about 230 mg). On June 13, 2022, the Hayabusa2 Sample Allocation Committee*2 (HSAC) approved the selection results of the AO Panel.

    • *1:Ryugu Sample Research Announcement of Opportunity Committee (AO Panel)
      Determine the selection of the research proposal theme, select reviewers, deliberate and select proposals based on peer review evaluation. Propose the selection plan to the HSAC. Panel consisted of 9 domestic and foreign researchers.
    • *2:Hayabusa2 Sample Allocation Committee (HSAC)
      Discuss and decide the distribution policy of the Ryugu sample and select the AO panel committee members. Established under the Astromaterials Science Research Group. Consists of 10 domestic and foreign researchers.
  • (4) Future plans

    • ・Samples from asteroid Ryugu will be distributed from the end of June.
    • ・A total of four international AOs are planned, held every 6 months.
