Status of "Lunar surface data Acquisition Mission for Pressurized rover Exploration (LAMPE)"

April 26, 2023 (JST)

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) planned the operation for the mission called “Lunar surface data Acquisition Mission for Pressurized rover Exploration (LAMPE)”, via the HAKUTO-R Mission 1 Lunar Lander of ispace, inc., (ispace). However, ispace reported that the communication between the lander and the HAKUTO-R Mission Control Center was lost, leading to our determination that executing the LAMPE mission is no longer possible.

The Transformable Lunar Robot developed by JAXA in collaboration with TOMY Company, Ltd., Sony Group Corporation, and Doshisha University was not released to the lunar surface. It could not acquire mission data as part of the LAMPE mission, however, the knowledge gained during the development and preparation for the operation of this mission will be utilized in research and development for future lunar exploration.
